There are many different kinds of boarding schools. While all boarding schools offer a curriculum that will lead to completion of high school, boarding schools differ in their focus. Many parents are not sure what type of school they need. Some types of boarding schools are:
Military Boarding Schools: Military Boarding Schools have some components of other boarding schools. Many of them offer an honor curriculum and dual high school/college enrollment for those ready for the challenge of college level work as well as a less advanced curriculum. Some military schools have classes for those needing to improve study skills and personal discipline. While not entirely sports-focused, many military boarding schools have an excellent physical education curriculum. Many students who attend military school have a desire to follow a military career in the future.
The military school setting does not accept those with significant emotional, behavioral, substance abuse or learning issues and while it is a structured setting, it is not a therapeutic environment.
Therapeutic Boarding Schools: Therapeutic boarding schools offer a highly structured and therapeutic environment with staff trained to deal with children having emotional, behavioral or substance abuse issues or significant learning differences. Therapy is an important component of this type of boarding school, considered as important as English or mathematics.
College Prep Boarding Schools: A college prep boarding school has a rigorous and challenging academic program with the focus on entrance into top colleges and universities. The college prep boarding school draws those with top grades and has strict entrance requirements. Most college prep boarding school do not accept students with emotional, behavioral, or substance abuse issues or significant learning differences.
