World Geography - This course at EXCEL is a study of the earth and its physical, human, political and economic characteristics. Its emphasis is the understanding of the interactions between peoples and a comparative understanding of the various cultures of the world.
World History - This course covers the major developments in world history from prehistoric times to the present, with an emphasis on the impact of ideas and technology and the spread of civilization. Emphasis is placed on the human aspects of these issues in an attempt to focus the students' attention on the fact that major historical figures were human, with both strengths and weaknesses.
US History - The curriculum is an analysis of United States history and the institutions that contributed to the evolution of the American nation from colonial times to modern day. The U.S. Constitution and the basic American principles of freedom, liberty and equality are themes throughout the year. Major events and the people involved are examined from the point of view that the "how and why" of the American experience is far more important than just memorizing facts.
American Government - This is a senior course that examines the political and governmental system of the United States, its founding principles, and the institutions and systems that comprise it. Topics discussed include the formation of the Constitution, federalism, political parties, interest groups, civil liberties and the workings of the American bureaucracy. This class emphasizes critical thinking and written expression through the use of essay test similar to those used in college-level course.
Economics - Economics is a study of basic economic theory. The market economy is the focus, with in-depth studies of the stock market, governmental regulation and intervention, and comparative studies of various world economic systems. The class also explores the concept of a global economy.
