EXCEL Academy of Texas, a fully accredited co-educational boarding school for teens, combines college preparatory academics with a strong culture of recovery from substance abuse to serve troubled and underachieving teenagers. Located one hour north of Houston, EXCEL Academy is situated on 35 acres in a beautiful, retreat-like setting and follows a traditional 12-step philosophy. Our minimum length of stay is one academic term, or 4 months. We recommend 3 full terms at EXCEL Academy. This will enable most students to complete at least one grade level if they arrive behind in academic credits. The school provides an environment where students in grades 9-12 can safely distance themselves from the distractions of their home environment, negative peer relationships, and other detractors from living a positive life. Staff members at EXCEL Academy of Texas understand that one of their functions is to serve as role models for students as well as supervise positive peer interactions. Older students are also expected to provide a strong, positive peer community designed to lead new students in constructive directions. At EXCEL it is fashionable to earn good grades and high SAT scores.
EXCEL Academy of Texas has a compelling history of success with students who have had previous school failures or where the perceived outcome has been poor or nonexistent. The substance abuse education program offers an AA/NA 12-step model with nationally recognized relapse prevention work. The Academy places a heavy emphasis on ensuring that all students feel safe and part of "a family" regardless of past environment, academic performance, behavior, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or substance abuse history.
