EXCEL Academy, a fully accredited co-educational boarding school for teens, combines college preparatory academics with a strong culture of recovery from substance abuse to serve troubled and underachieving teenagers. Located one hour north of Houston, EXCEL is situated on 35 acres in a rural, ranch-style setting and follows a 12-step philosophy. The school provides an environment where students can safely distance themselves from the distractions of their home environment, negative peer relationships, and other detractors from living a positive life. Many of the academy's graduating seniors have produced first-rate SAT scores and English percentiles in the 90's, moving on to top notch universities.

What Type of Teens Come to EXCEL?

EXCEL Academy of Texas students share many things in common. The most important, and the one for which we offer an unparalleled program of support, is for substance abuse recovery from the detrimental effects of using drugs and/or alcohol.

EXCEL Academy has a compelling history of success with students who have had previous school failures or where the perceived outcome has been poor or nonexistent. The substance abuse education program offers a 12-step model with nationally recognized relapse prevention work. The program combines a sensitive and nurturing environment with a no-nonsense and effective approach for resistant teens with skills building in areas such as anger management, conflict resolution. The Academy places a heavy emphasis on ensuring that all students feel safe and part of "a family" regardless of past behavior.

Over 76% of EXCEL students go on to college. Past graduates have been accepted at such top-notch schools as Georgetown University, Rice University, Texas A&M, and Fordham University.

The goal of EXCEL Academy is to teach students that recovery is not only beneficial, but also opens up a whole new world of possibilities. We offer extra-curricular activities to help students learn about themselves and gain self-esteem. These include a scuba certification program, debate team, equine program, baseball team, and various clubs.
