Team Practice: Cross Country/Swimming/Baseball
Athletes involved in the Cross Country, Swim Team, and Baseball carry on a tradition of Excellence that started last spring when EXCEL Academy created it's first TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) athletics program.
All coaches are proud to lead and support new and previous students in their quest for athletic excellence, attending and competing in regional and state competition.
Off Campus Meetings
Students will have the opportunity to travel off campus to attend AA meetings at local meeting-houses. This has allowed students the ability to share their experiences with other individuals outside the EXCEL Academy sphere while still remaining in a very comfortable setting. Many have the chance to talk with individuals with years of sobriety and a wealth of knowledge that can only be gained through experience with addiction. Meetings are set up in different locations 4 days out of the week.
Debate Practice
EXCEL Academy of Texas Students have participated in the debate program for 4 years. Valuable skills that students have strengthened include: communication, organization, and the ability to be objective especially under mental pressure. Students in debate work on techniques daily and tournaments are held off campus 2 times each month.
On Campus Meetings and Campfire Meeting
It has been said that campfires open people's minds and hearts and this has been the case with ours. Our campfire meetings are held on campus and provide students who have not yet earned the opportunity to travel off campus the ability to participate in AA meetings, as well as providing older students an opportunity to be a strength and a guide.
Team Building/ Activities
Most of our activities facilitated on Saturdays are designed to promote teamwork, communication, creativity, leadership and confidence. Facilitators often include experiential learning (aka: ropes course) games and initiatives to bring unity and openness to students. These activities are facilitated both on and off campus.
EXCEL Academy of Texas Dance Team
The EXCEL Academy of Texas Dance Team has been going strong for 3 years. Prior to Dance, Students participated in Dinner Theatre. Our dance team director has been with EXCEL Academy for 7 years and is very devoted to her girls (and now boys) that are interested in dance. Students compete in Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Swing. The team has been very competitive in just a short time winning the District competition two out of the last three years.
Saturday Barbecues
Our Saturday barbecues have been a big plus as we rotate all the dorms from week to week. Hotdogs and burgers sizzling on a grill tend to do a lot to lighten a load after a long hard week of school and dorm mates. Our barbecue is a great time to sit back, relax, and reflect on the previous week or to help prepare for the upcoming one.
Movies
Every Tuesday, students have the opportunity to attend a current movie at a local movie theatre. As an earned privilege, students work towards this reward by doing well in school as well as being consistent in their programmatic work. There is not much that beats some time in a cool theatre on a hot summer day with some popcorn and a drink.
